MSME Pulse - July 2026

A Comprehensive Report on the MSME Credit Activity in India

Individual borrower-led business lending continues to gain momentum, with loan balances growing 1.8x between March 2023 and March 2026, significantly outpacing the 1.5x growth recorded among entity borrowers. This trend highlights the increasing role of individual entrepreneurs, proprietorships, and self-employed borrowers in driving MSME credit demand and business expansion across the country.

A significant opportunity remains to deepen formal credit penetration within the MSME sector.  41% borrowers either as business entities or individual borrowers have accessed formal credit with an active loan. The sizeable, untapped segment underscores the potential for lenders to expand outreach, foster financial inclusion, and support the growth aspirations of underserved enterprises.

The overall commercial credit portfolio remained resilient, with delinquency levels broadly stable at 1.8% as of March 2026. While portfolio performance continues to demonstrate strength, the analysis also points to emerging pockets of risk within specific borrower segments, highlighting the importance of proactive monitoring and targeted risk management strategies as the macro environment evolves.
